Elmore County was formed from now-defunct Alturas County, established February
7, 1889. The county was named for the Ida Elmore mines, the area's greatest
silver and gold producer of the 1860's. Elmore County gained a bit of territory
south of the Snake River from Owyhee County in 1930. Another small portion was
annexed to Elmore County in 1948, from Ada County.
The county seat was moved
from Rocky Bar to Mountain Home February 4, 1891.
Elmore county is home
to three of Idaho's major reservoirs; Lucky Peak, Anderson Ranch, and Arrowrock
and is also home to Idaho's only major military installation, Mountain Home Air
Force Base.
