Prairie Cemetery

Small high mountain cemetery. It is kept with natural grasses and wildflowers. The cemetery had been closed to new internments until the 1980's due to a loss of records. Anyone with knowledge of an older burial is invited to share, any and all information.

From the Idaho Historical Society in Boise: "The Smith Prairie Cemetery is located in a field just west of the Peter Ireland Ranch. It is now the home of Elmer & Barbara Ireland. The cemetery was first used as a place of rest for Jay Nauerth in 1903. He passed away as a result of drowning in the South Fork of the Boise River. The Cemetery was used by the Prairie Community until the 1930s when most of the burials began to take place in Boise or nearby communities. (I believe this was due to the poor upkeep of the cemetery and the lack of water to the site). In 1982, the cemetery was reopened and an effort was made to transform the grounds into the native grasses requiring little water. It is now surrounded by a chain link fence."
